Consumer Protection Council
The Consumer Protection Council is a statutory body established under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019 to promote and protect consumer rights in India. It serves as an advisory body to ensure consumer awareness and provide recommendations for policy improvements.
Objectives of Consumer Protection Councils
- Promote and protect consumer rights.
- Ensure consumer awareness about fair trade practices.
- Provide recommendations for policy changes.
- Strengthen the grievance redressal system.
Types of Consumer Protection Councils
The Act establishes three levels of Consumer Protection Councils:
- Central Consumer Protection Council (CCPC) – National level.
- State Consumer Protection Council (SCPC) – State level.
- District Consumer Protection Council (DCPC) – District level.
Each council functions as an advisory body to ensure the implementation of consumer rights and fair trade practices.
1. Central Consumer Protection Council (CCPC)
Composition:
- Chaired by the Union Minister of Consumer Affairs.
- Includes official and non-official members as prescribed.
Functions:
- Advises the government on consumer protection policies.
- Promotes and protects consumer rights at the national level.
- Reviews existing laws and recommends improvements.
2. State Consumer Protection Council (SCPC)
Composition:
- Chaired by the Minister in charge of Consumer Affairs in the State Government.
- Includes official and non-official members.
Functions:
- Advises the state government on consumer protection issues.
- Ensures the implementation of consumer awareness programs.
- Protects consumer rights within the state.
3. District Consumer Protection Council (DCPC)
Composition:
- Chaired by the District Collector.
- Includes official and non-official members.
Functions:
- Promotes consumer protection at the district level.
- Ensures the enforcement of consumer laws in local markets.
- Organizes consumer awareness campaigns.
