4.Alternative Forms of International Transfers

  • Short-term assignments: Assignments lasting less than one year. Example: Sending an employee to a foreign subsidiary for a three-month project.
  • Commuter assignments: Employees regularly travel between their home country and the host country. Example: An employee who lives in one country but commutes weekly to work in a neighboring country.
  • Virtual assignments: Employees work on international projects remotely. Example: A team of software developers from different countries collaborating on a project using online tools.
  • Inpatriation: Transferring HCNs to the headquarters or another location in the parent country. Example: Bringing a successful manager from a foreign subsidiary to work at headquarters to share their local market knowledge.
